About Us
Charles William Muir opened Muirs Bookshop in Gisborne on 22 July 1905. Charles Muir ran this business until his death in 1943. Bowser Toogood, married to a niece of Charles, ran the shop until 1983. Bowser's strong interest in sports ensured sports books were top priority. Miss Vivienne Quigley, who had worked for Bowser for 30 years, then purchased the shop and the focus moved to children's books. In 1986 Anne and Michael Muir (Michael being the only grandson of Charles Muir and owner of the Gisborne Herald) purchased the shop from Miss Quigley and in 1987 moved to the larger premises at 62 Gladstone Road, where it remains today. The shop was beautifully refitted, a cafe added upstairs in 2003 and Muirs Bookshop became one of the best Independent Bookshops in New Zealand. Anne and Michael Muir sold the bookshop to present owners Kim and Guy Pittar in 2008. Kim manages the shop, and is ensuring the bookshop continues to supply the best of literary fiction, non-fiction, biographies, Maori books and children's books.
