Hooked on Hunting: Stories from the Bush order quantity
  +   -
NZ$ 45.00 each
Paperback
Author: Martin Brenstrum
In Stock: 2
Martin Brenstrum has been exploring New Zealand's backcountry since as far back as he can remember.
In Hooked on Hunting he shares a decade and a half of hunting yarns (and a few good fishing yarns along the way), from the days when you could go bush in the morning and be home in the evening with a deer cheque in your pocket and a satisfied, if knackered, grin on your face. Recalling the many friends he hunted with and the often hugely entertaining - at least in the telling - experiences they had in all weathers, in all conditions, but invariably with equal doses of enthusiasm and determination, Brenstrum also shares his keen knowledge of their quarry, the surrounds and the skills needed to be successful in the rough terrain they traversed.
Thoroughly engaging reading, this is not a book just for hunters but for anyone who enjoys a good yarn.

Hunting : A New Zealand History order quantity
  +   -
NZ$ 50.00 each
Paperback
Author: Kate Hunter
In Stock: 2
Thousands of New Zealanders have hunted in the past and continue to hunt today.
New Zealanders like to think of themselves as a nation of 'can-do' people. The national legend is populated
by physically capable, self-reliant men and women. That legend used to be based on pioneers and farmers,
and has now come to encompass our identity as outdoor adventurers and conservationists.
Hunters belong in this national story as well. Hunting was essential to successful colonisation. It touched the
core need to eat and the human desire to share meals. It served as a form of community building, of family
cohesion, it involved inter-generational knowledge being handed down. Cutting across racial and class
differences, hunting tells us more about different groups and their perspectives on the natural world.

First published August 2009.

The Bushwhackers : Hunting Adventures on Stewart Island order quantity
  +   -
NZ$ 35.00 each
Paperback
Author: Dean Taylor
In Stock: 2
A the age of 16, Dean Taylor was invited to go on his first hunting party to Stewart Island. It was a trip that immediately captivated him with the rugged beauty of the island, and the thrill of the hunt of deer in such a remote part of the world. Since then he's been back to the island another 21 times. Over the years, Dean gets together a regular hunting party, a group of men who enjoy the chase, the scenery and more than a few beers. The tales are told with humour and capture the comraderie and the isolation that is experienced while hunting in such a remote part of the world. The lads have been chased by sharks, have had numerous close shaves with tree rats and have possibly shot as many deer as they have missed. The tally of deer carcasses is only surpassed by the tally of empty beer cans on their return to the mainland. Would you believe that on more than one hunting trip Dean has come across a hippo on Stewart ... more

The Deer Cullers order quantity
  +   -
NZ$ 40.00 each
Paperback
Author: Hans Willems
In Stock: 2
Starting in the 1930s New Zealand undertook an innovative step to deal with what the then powers that were perceived as a serious conservation menace; the placing of hunters in the New Zealand back country to reduce the number of deer. So started the profession of deer culler; unique in the world, one of hardship and adventure.
Later, authors like Barry Crump (A Good Keen Man) were to glorify the job and separating fact from fiction proved hard for many a reader. Here at last is an authentic work about the origins and methods of deer culling in New Zealand, written with the help of ex-cullers "Old Firm" and with the support of the New Zealand Deer Cullers Inc. The Deer Cullers is the book closest to the author's heart. He travelled the country far and wide to interview ex cullers, taking a full three years of hard graft to take it to completion.

The words "Trifullarious von repens, drum ditty dum" were immortalised in Ron Helmer's book Stag Party, spoken by the slightly hung-over Snow (aka Colin Jones). This is his story!

In an age when young men took to the hills to protect New Zealand's bush from the ravages of deer and pigs (which the wisdom of the day had made responsible for all the ills that beset New Zealand), deer cullers were the nation's saviours. Men such as Barry Crump, Mike Bennett, Alan Farmer and all the others that have put pen to paper over the years to record the work carried out by these selfless heroes. Jonesy was there, starting in Ruatahuna in 1954, as a government shooter. In 1962 the New Zealand Forest Service published a 36-page booklet by Don Kiddle "The Sika Deer in New Zealand". It was the first information about Sika deer in NZ, and based on hundreds of hours of observation and research from a skilled hunter. The booklet was for many years the only information about a relatively unknown breed of deer in NZ. The original booklet had to be reprinted several times. From an early age Don was destined to become a hunter, and his ability was honed from years of professional deer culling as well as his won recreational hunting. These skills allowed him to not only take the animals he sought but also to get close enough to take nearly all of the photos in this book without the use of modern telephoto lenses.
